Why we built it
Before I made films, I was a civil rights trial lawyer. In a courtroom, whoever tells the story decides what the room believes. For too long, our stories on screen were told by people who didn’t live them. So I started making films, so we could tell them ourselves, and tell them well.
This fall we took Wildcards from city to city. In Norfolk the room cheered and booed like it was their own trial. In Richmond the Q&A ran long past the credits. That feeling, watching together and talking back, is what the Society keeps going between films.

When we are developing a film, members weigh in first: choose between the ideas we are deciding on, and tell us who you would love to see in the lead. The people who show up help decide what gets made.
Every 90 days a new programme: Blacklight films, buried work and premieres that are not streaming anywhere else. Each film arrives with a note on why it is here.
One filmmaker per season joins the Society directly: their work, their process, their argument. A conversation, not a panel.
Titles like Within Our Gates, The Blood of Jesus and Hellbound Train, restored frame by frame, with the making of each film and what it means to Black cinema laid out alongside it. Built to be studied rather than scrolled.
